WHY BOXING ISN'T JUST A TREND - ALYSSA WILMARTH

Is boxing a trend? Well… I think the best place to start is the history of the sport. Boxing originated in 688 BC in ancient Greece, when it was first inducted into the Olympic Games. Boxing evolved further in Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries with the introduction of the Longdon Prize Ring Rules in 1838. Later, the Marquess of Queensberry Rules in 1867, which established more formal rules and new regulations that required boxing gloves to be used. WHAT! Imagine all those years with no gloves 😮. Talk about a game changer…

Boxing is instinctual. We may not realize it., but we all have a fight or flight. Boxing is fine-tuning your ability to choose to fight and not flight. It's been around since the beginning of time and who knows, It may have even been the very first method of conflict resolution.

To address the question further… as one of the “original” fighting sports amongst the UFC and various mixed martial arts workouts and brands yes, boxing is certainly the more traditional option. In my opinion that is what makes the sport and workout timeless.

Boxing IS the fundamental ground of all additional fighting sports that we know of today. Every one of them include a jab, cross, hook, or body shot. To be a trend, something has to have a short life span. I would argue that rather than boxing being a trend, the sport continues to evolve. From Tae-Bo with Billy Blanks on VCR to Rumble Boxing the sport has shown its longevity through many variations of fitness infatuation.

On a personal note, boxing for me will never be something that I can fully achieve, thus making the sport elusive. I started at the fitness level taking classes for fun and  working with a trainer. That then turned into punch drills with other clients of my coach, which later turned into my first amerature fight. Beyond the amerature level, there’s the pro level. You have pro fighters that specialize in so many different talents. Whether it be fast punchers like Manny Pacquiao, power punchers like Mike Tyson, body shot champions like Canelo, long-range punchers that use their height like Mikayala Mayer, or combo punchers like Katie Taylor… There is no limit to the talent that is professional boxing. Each year we see new boxers take the spotlight along with them, their boxing style becoming infamous.

Even after we pull all of the things I have shared back, the sport and workout itself are still in my opinion the best out there for you. Strength, balance, coordination, speed, agility, and more… There is no other single workout that can provide you with all that you need in a fully-body well-balanced workout the way that boxing does.

Have different opinions? Well… I guess you’ll just have to fight me. 😉
